Thomas Prichard Rossiter (1818–1871) was an important nineteenth-century American painter known principally for portraiture, historical subjects, and religious compositions. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Rossiter studied with portrait painter Nathaniel Jocelyn before establishing his own career. He began exhibiting at the National Academy of Design in the late 1830s and in 1840 traveled to Europe in the company of several artists who would become major figures in American landscape painting, including Asher B. Durand, John Frederick Kensett, and John William Casilear. While abroad, Rossiter also traveled with Thomas Cole, founder of the Hudson River School, and spent several years in Italy studying the Old Masters and developing his abilities as a painter.

After returning to New York in 1846, Rossiter shared a studio with John Frederick Kensett and Louis Lang. He was elected a full National Academician in 1849, establishing his position within one of the most important artistic institutions in nineteenth-century America. Rossiter later became particularly celebrated for ambitious paintings drawn from American history. Among his best-known works is Washington and Lafayette at Mount Vernon, 1784, painted in collaboration with Louis Rémy Mignot and now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His paintings were exhibited at major institutions during his lifetime, including the National Academy of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and he received international recognition for works exhibited in Paris.

Rossiter eventually settled in Cold Spring, New York, overlooking the Hudson River, where he continued painting until his death in 1871. Winter in the Country — “Dawn,” with its New England architecture, mill, frozen water, snow-covered landscape, and distant mountain, reveals a less frequently encountered aspect of Rossiter’s career. Painted circa 1850 and bearing both the artist’s “TR” monogram on the front and his full signature on the verso, the work offers a particularly appealing connection between Rossiter and the American landscape tradition practiced by many of his closest artistic contemporaries.
