Ferdinand Reichardt (1819–1895)—better known internationally as Joachim Ferdinand Richardt—was a Danish-American landscape artist celebrated for his views of Niagara Falls, the Hudson River, and notable American and European sites. His works are held in prominent collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Underneath Niagara Falls), the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Steamwheeler on the Upper Mississippi), the Oakland Museum of California, the National Gallery of Denmark, the Yale University Art Gallery, George Washington’s Mount Vernon, and the White House collection, which owns two of his American river landscapes. His paintings have also been the focus of exhibitions such as Ferdinand Richardt’s Niagara: A Study in Landscape Painting at the Heckscher Museum of Art, and regularly appear at major auction houses including Christie’s, Sotheby’s, and Bonhams. Pastoral Scene fits squarely within this celebrated body of work, bringing Reichardt’s refined eye for topography and atmosphere to a quieter, agrarian corner of the New York countryside.
