Elwyn George Gowen (1895–1954) was a Maine-born painter and designer trained at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where he earned the Ripley Scholarship, the Thayer Prize, and two Cummings Traveling Scholarships. He later studied and taught in the Ogunquit art colony under Charles Woodbury, becoming closely associated with the region’s coastal artistic tradition. Gowen’s work has been featured in the Tufts University Art Gallery exhibition Elements of Expression: The Art and Design of Elwyn George Gowen and is the focus of an upcoming retrospective at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, which is actively sourcing works from private owners. His paintings remain held primarily in private New England coastal-art collections and appear regularly in regional galleries and auction houses, where they continue to attract collectors drawn to his sensitive interpretations of Maine’s shoreline, light, and rugged natural forms.
