Elwyn George Gowen (1895–1954) was a Maine-born American painter trained at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where he earned the Ripley Scholarship, the Thayer Prize, and two Cummings Traveling Scholarships. He later studied and taught in Ogunquit under Charles Woodbury, becoming closely associated with the region’s art community. Gowen’s work has been exhibited at institutions such as the Tufts University Art Gallery (in the exhibition Elements of Expression) and is the focus of a forthcoming retrospective at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art. His paintings appear frequently in the auction market and in private New England coastal art collections, sustaining his reputation as a sensitive interpreter of Maine’s landscape and maritime life.
